After each Summer Lab (and sometimes Pro Lab) we evaluate which results could really make a difference in society if given substantial development time and further research.

We provide our network of educational institutes with these case studies in the form of practical assignments.

Finally, after the annual programme in many of the relevant fields of study, Kolabo hosts a final evaluation with experts to see if and how these spin-offs can be applied or activated.

The ingredients of Kolabo Edu Labs

  • An even broader range of young talent than we had in Kolabo Summer Lab or Pro Lab. Edu Labs is where we have more time and talent on our hand.
  • Alliances with various types of higher education. We even haven mutually competitive educational institutes amongst them, who are now eager to show off their skills.
  • Kolabo can provide professional speakers and workshops that can come to classes and inspire them to further develop these cases.
  • Each class gets a very specific challenge, tailormade by Kolabo to suit their specific needs. For instance... CMD: Design a telepresence experience with immersive interface for Kolabo Diners. Crossmedia Advertising: Brand it and explain added value of the service to various involved parties.
  • The founders of Kolabo love to tweak education models (see our latest process design on the blog). We write (or co-write with teachers and professors) each assignment to fit perfectly in a puzzle that is outsourced to different specialisms.
  • Because we work with young and upcoming talent, we can offer you interesting rates, while we offer these talents some truly innovative projects to put on their cv.

Current Edu lab

A highlight from the 2009 Summer Lab challenge (Re-tribalisation) was reintroduced into higher education: online dining.

Can we help the socially isolated 6% of Dutch people? The concept of online dining researches how socially isolated people can be reconnected.

The assignment: develop a platform, tools, marketing plans and advertising campaigns for online dining, targeted at the chronically ill at home / hospital.

At the start of this Edulab we gave the students lectures on relevant aspects telepresence, physical immersion, eating design, food culture, etiquette and privacy.

Students from Hogeschool Rotterdam's CMD course designed prototyped user experiences, presented as a staged roleplay.

Students from The Willem de Kooning Academy's Advertising course proposed co-branded marketing strategies and cross-media campaigns.

The various results and ideas from this year's Edulab will be publicly presented soon and featured on our website.

Our Goal

KOLABO is a Communication Research Laboratory. Its goal is to initiate research and publish about the possibilities of new communication technologies that contribute to human values.

To reach this goal Kolabo boasts a powerful architecture of participation with creative lab sessions, workshops and lectures. The aim is to make plausible the many intriguing scenarios for our future.

Motivation

Technological advancement has always been a source of both fear and hope. New technologies ignore old processes, leaving behind those who live by the old rules.

Yet technology can also help to overcome isolation and create new social perspectives.

Kolabo’s motivation is to find ways to forward society in a way that truly adheres to basic human values.
